This fourth edition of the ACOP and guidance on regulations contains revisions to simplify and clarify the text. The main changes are removing Part 2, the technical guidance, which is published separately in HSG274, and giving the following issues ACOP status:

    • risk assessment
    • the specific role of an appointed competent person, known as the ‘responsible person’
    • the control scheme
    • review of control measures
    • duties and responsibilities of those involved in the supply of water systems

Legionnaires Disease kills – Are you taking appropriate precautions? Legionnaires’ disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by legionella bacteria. Infection is caused by breathing in small droplets of water which have been contaminated with legionella bacteria. There are many hundreds of reported cases of Legionnaires’ disease each year in the UK, of which around 12% result in death.

It is your legal duty as an employer or person in control of the premises to consider the risk and take suitable precautions to protect your staff or members of the public from the risk of infection.
